Natural Balance House - San Juan Island
A Balance of Green Building and Art
The Natural Balance house is Energy certified, and is pursuing other certifications as well, including 5-star Built Green and LEED for Homes Platinum. It features a 20,000-gallon rainwater cistern to meet 100% of water needs, solar hot water, geothermal heating, LED lighting, and many other sustainable features.
Living Roof / Green Roof
The Natural Balance House makes use of a Living Roof. This means that the roof is covered with living vegetation as well as a growing medium. These Roofs are covered with a waterproofing membrane as to avoid seepage of water into the house proper. They provide a natural insulation barrier, absorption of stormwater and saving on heating costs, all while looking amazing aesthetically pleasing.
SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) Roof
A Structural Insulated Panel or SIP roof are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings. SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor. The Natural Balance House makes use of a very unique "Curved" Roof to assist with Rainwater collection.
Solar Hot Water Heaters and Geo Thermal in Floor Radiant Heat
The Natural Balance House makes use of Solar hot water collectors much like the Sun Rise Complex, however with an extra added step. The excess hot water that isn't used in showering or washing dishes is transferred into a Geo-Thermal heating system. This system uses the temperature differences below ground to fully heat the home, coupled with excess hot water. This home doesn't let a single resource go to waste! Contrary to popular belief, Radiant in floor systems are not warm to the touch. They slowly fill a room with warmth, literally from the ground up. Keeping rooms a comfortable temperature all day long. to the left you can see all the mechanical features that help the Sun Heated coolant funnel down into a water tank. From there the hot water is dispersed throughout the home. Any excess hot water (which is collected any time the sun is shining) is re routed into the ABOVE in floor radiant tubing. A medium in poured over the tubes once in place and hides the radiant tubing system from sight, however it doesn't hide the heat that builds up and out of the floor!
